When are you entitled to compensation from easyJet?

If your flight has been delayed by more than three hours, cancelled, or you've been denied boarding, you may be entitled to compensation - unless there are exceptional circumstances that the airline could not have foreseen.

How to assess your right to compensation

Air passenger rights in the EU are protected by Regulation 261/2004, which applies to all flights departing from an EU country and all flights operated by an EU airline.

EasyJet is a British airline and therefore not subject to the EU regulation. However, the UK has its own regulation "UK261", which is very similar to the EU regulation, but can only be enforced in the UK. If you've been on an easyJet flight that did not depart from the EU, we can still help you - we have access to courts in the UK.

EasyJet also has two affiliate airlines EasyJet Switzerland and EasyJet Europe, both of which fall under the EU regulation.

You can claim compensation if one of the following applies:

  • The delay at the destination was at least three hours

  • The cancellation was announced less than 14 days before flight departure

  • You were denied boarding because the flight was overbooked

And if the flight disruption was not caused by extraordinary circumstances.

What are extraordinary circumstances?

EasyJet and other airlines are obliged to pay compensation unless the delay or cancellation is due to something completely extraordinary.

Extraordinary circumstances can be, for example:

  • Bad weather that makes flying dangerous

  • Security threats or political unrest

  • Airport staff or third parties on strike

  • Closed airports or traffic authorities restricting air traffic

But technical failures, staff shortages and scheduling errors by the airline do not absolve them of liability - and this is exactly where many airlines try to avoid paying.

What are you entitled to if your easyJet flight is cancelled or delayed?

In case of cancellations, you as a passenger are entitled to:

  • Full refund of your ticket

  • Alternative transport to the same or nearby airport

  • Rebooking to another flight at a later date

  • Compensation if the cancellation occurs close to the departure date

Please note: If the airline offers you a new flight and you arrive less than two hours later than your original flight, the compensation may be cancelled.

In case of delays, you as a passenger are entitled to:

  • Compensation for additional expenses, such as meals and refreshments at the airport, if the delay is more than 2 hours.

  • Financial compensation if the delay was more than 3 hours
