Why can I get compensation from Finnair?
Finnair must offer its passengers financial compensation in the event of delays, cancellations or overbookings according to EU Regulation 261/2004. This legislation protects the rights of air passengers and ensures that airlines are liable when their errors cause inconvenience to passengers.
Your rights in case of cancelled or delayed flights
According to EU Regulation 261/2004, passengers are entitled to compensation for delays and cancellations caused by non-extraordinary circumstances. This also applies to Finnair flights.
Compensation for cancellations
If your flight was cancelled less than 14 days before departure, you may be entitled to compensation. Compensation is calculated based on how much later you arrived at your destination.
Remember, if Finnair has informed you of the cancellation more than 14 days before departure, unfortunately you cannot claim compensation, but you are still entitled to a full refund of your ticket.
Compensation for delays
You can claim compensation if your Finnair flight is more than 3 hours late on arrival.
However, to be eligible for compensation, it requires that the delay was within Finnair's control and thus not due to extraordinary circumstances, such as extremely bad weather, terrorist threats etc.
How much compensation can I get?
The amount of compensation depends on the length of the delay and the distance of the flight. To make it easier to understand, we have created a table that gives an overview of the EU 261/2004 rules for the amount of compensation:
Reason | Delayed arrival | Flights under 1.500 km | Flights 1.501 - 3.500 km | Flights over 3.500 km between EU-countries | Flights over 3.500 km to/from EU-countries |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Cancelled* | 2 – 3 hours | 250 € | 200 € | 200 € | 300 € |
Cancelled /Delayed | 3 – 4 hours | 250 € | 400 € | 400 € | 300 € |
Cancelled/Delayed | More than 4 hours** | 250 € | 400 € | 400 € | 600 € |
Overbooked | 250 € | 400 € | 400 € | 600 € |
* If the cancellation occurs less than 7 days before the scheduled departure.
** If the cancellation occurs between 14-7 days before the scheduled departure.
