Your rights in case of delayed or cancelled flights with Wizz Air
If your flight with Wizz Air has been delayed, cancelled or overbooked within the last 3 years, you may be entitled to compensation under EU Regulation 261/2004.
When is compensation triggered for Wizz Air delays?
You are entitled to financial compensation if:
✅ Your delayed Wizz Air flight arrived more than 3 hours later than scheduled
✅ Your flight was cancelled less than 14 days before departure
✅ You were denied boarding due to overbooking
The amount of compensation depends on the length of the flight and the delay on arrival - not on departure. You can get an overview of the EU regulation's rules on compensation amounts here:
Reason | Delayed arrival | Flights under 1.500 km | Flights 1.501 - 3.500 km | Flights over 3.500 km between EU-countries | Flights over 3.500 km to/from EU-countries |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Cancelled* | 2 – 3 hours | 250 € | 200 € | 200 € | 300 € |
Cancelled /Delayed | 3 – 4 hours | 250 € | 400 € | 400 € | 300 € |
Cancelled/Delayed | More than 4 hours** | 250 € | 400 € | 400 € | 600 € |
Overbooked | 250 € | 400 € | 400 € | 600 € |
* If the cancellation occurs less than 7 days before the scheduled departure.
** If the cancellation occurs between 14-7 days before the scheduled departure.
For delays of more than 2 hours, Wizz Air must also provide meals and two free calls. Remember to save receipts in case you have to cover your own expenses during the delay.
What applies to Wizz Air cancellations?
If your Wizz Air flight was cancelled and you arrived more than 3 hours later than planned, you are generally entitled to compensation.
If you were notified of the cancellation less than 7 days before departure, you are entitled to compensation if you arrived more than 2 hours after the original time.
If the cancellation happened more than 14 days before your flight, you are still entitled to a refund, but you are generally not eligible for compensation.
Extraordinary and non-extraordinary circumstances
You can only get compensation from the airline if the delay or cancellation was not due to extraordinary circumstances - events beyond the airline's control.
Non-extraordinary circumstances (entitles you to compensation):
Technical problems with the aircraft
Staff shortages or internal strikes at Wizz Air
Planning errors in Wizz Air operations
Extraordinary circumstances (not eligible for compensation):
Bad weather (e.g. storm or fog)
Security threats such as terrorism or political unrest
Airspace restrictions
Strike among air traffic controllers
As a passenger, it can be difficult to assess whether you are entitled to compensation - especially if the reason is unclear. At Refundmore, we investigate all flights and check if Wizz Air is trying to avoid paying compensation without a valid reason.

About Wizz Air
Wizz Air is a Hungarian low-cost airline operating throughout Europe and to selected destinations in the Middle East and Asia. Founded in 2003, the airline currently has a large fleet of Airbus aircraft, operating hundreds of flights daily.
Wizz Air markets itself as a low-cost alternative, but the high frequency of flights also means that many passengers experience delays, overbookings and cancellations.
